For anyone who wants to look summer sexy, not just those of us over 50
Ladies, lets get real. We are not what we used to be. The first step in your quest to look sexy in those cute little summer outfits, is to take a good (and Honest) look at yourself. Difficult, we know, but if you want to turn heads, it is mandatory.
We all have our flaws. Some we’ve lived with since childhood, others just popped up out of nowhere. Remember that day you looked in the mirror and went O.M.G. when did that happen and how long have I been walking around like that?! Whether it is a stray hair popping out of your chin, the flabby bat wings under your arms, or the sudden appearance of cellulite on once flawless legs.
But, there are solutions for everything, you just have to know what, then you can figure out the “how”. There are hundreds of hair removal solutions on the market, you can tweeze them when you find them (of course the only time you will notice that “one’ hair will be after an important business meeting or (gulp) a date.
A word on shorts. Ladies, please make sure they fit, do not hike up into the crack of your but when you stand up or are so tight your camel toes show. Nothing is more unattractive than a 50 year old lady with cellulite and a flabby tummy, trying to dress like a teenager, in tight hip hugger little short-shorts. My best fitting pair of shorts were cut from a great fitting pair of jeans.
But, of course if your 50 or older and you have a rock hard Hot Bod, then by all means go for it… (oh, did I mention… I hate you).
For those of us with less than perfect bods, whether its stretch marks, surgery scars, varicose veins, or just the natural dragging, drooping and flabbiness that most of us have been cursed with, we have to work hard to cover, hide and disguise.
But that doesn’t mean dressing like Dorothy on the Golden Girls, or resorting to baggy oversized T-shirts and sweat pants.
Hiding cellulite is easy. There are so many styles of pantyhose and stockings on the market, that are not just plain and sheer, but colorful, fanciful and fun, to dress up any summer outfit. As for cellulite “products’ that promise to get rid of it… well, we haven’t found anything that works yet.
Hate those little bat wings under your arms, and want to wear cool summer tank tops and sun dresses? Take a cue from Hollywood stars, a sheer big shirt, long sleeve shrug, (for those of you who don’t know what a shrug is, its similar to a bolero), or with long “sheer” sleeves, still shows off what you want to show, yet “disguises” the rest.
Then there’s that problem of the extra flabby skin around the tummy. I was always proud of my flat stomach, and showed it off… a lot. Then one morning I woke up, put on my favorite jeans and a cute little crop top and then my brother in law walked in and said “hey, looks like its getting out of control there”… !!!! I was horrified! I looked down and sure enough, there was that roll of fat hanging over my jeans! Where the *%$ did “that” come from!? I exercise, do sit ups, tummy tucks, twists… yet there it was… and I reluctantly retired all my cute little crop tops and Skimpy Clubwear outfits to the bottom drawer, (in the hopes that someday… I would be able to wear them again).
Well, those tops are out of the drawer! There is a solution, that does not require surgery or hours of exercise and hundreds or thousands of dollars spent on worthless “miracle” products, and it adds a bit of mystery and style at the same time.
Sheer or nearly sheer tops. Fishnet tops are great in the summer, and anything sheer or fishnet was made for summer. Sheer mini dresses that can be worn as a top that covers your belly, can be worn under those cute crop tops, and can actually be more flattering, and sexy, even on a rock hard flat tummy, (if you have one – oh and did I say I hate you).
Want to really make a splash? How about a sheer fishnet long top mini dress over a bikini top, and with long sleeves, it will help hide those bingo wings until you can get back into shape!
It’s funny how men’s minds work.
They will take a bigger interest in a “peek-a-boo” outfit that some twiggy model in a bare-it-all skimpy bikini.
Going to the beach, the river or pool? Bikini cover-ups are great, but if you want a tan, or want to go in the water, sooner or later… you have to take it off… and show everything. A sheer fishnet mini dress in bright neon colors can hide a lot, and you don’t have to take it off to jump in the water.
No arm flab yet? Just a tummy issue? Then a flattering one-piece swimsuit is what you need. (oh and yes... I hate you)
Then there are the legs. In the summer, you can still get away with wearing decorative fancy pantyhose and Thigh High Stockings with shorts or skirts, but at the beach, it’s bare all. But, going to the beach or pool with a pre-tan is always best, not only to save you from a painful burn, but you won’t blind anyone with your lilly white legs either.
Whether you get a pre-tan in your back yard or a tanning bed, just remember not to try to do it all in one day, start with 10 minutes the first day, increasing the time over several days, and most importantly, protect your face! If you've ever seen some of the older Hollywood stars who once sported flawless skin, once in a while there will be a close-up shot and you can see their skin is now covered with red sun freckles... and sun wrinkles!
Everyone knows about the aging side affect of too many suntans/sunburns. Never having been much of a sun worshiper, and working nights most of my life, I never had the time or patience to just sit in the sun waiting for my skin to change color.
I had a friend who was always outdoors in the sun, either just sitting there tanning, or laying on a raft in the pool. She is two years younger than me, and I almost didn't recognize her the last time I saw her - she looks ten years older than me!
There are a few products on the market for a quick tan, that will also protect you from the burning rays. Most tanning products all have sun protection and will provide good tan without the sun products to add color and protect your skin. Spray on tans are ok, but make sure they will not wash off in the water… and of course, spray on pantyhose.
Even though I rarely go out in the sun, I am always prepared and protected. I always find daily moisturizers and foundation make-up that includes some form of sun protection. I've been using Olay products since I turned 25, and although most women think that Olay is just for "aging" skin, they have wonderful products to protect your skin "now", while you're still young, to avoid damage "now", before its too late.
But, even as summer fades to fall, then winter, skin protection is just as important, if not more so. Cold dry winds can do as much damage as the sun if you're not protected. Although I love winter, mostly because I can get away with wearing fun Faux Fur Coats, long coats baggy sweaters and jeans padded with thermal underwear.
But now, with some real soul searching and honesty, accepting the changes that getting older has forced me to deal with, I can now look forward to summer. I can show off my best features, with a sexy low cut top, that draws attention to my cleavage and not my flabby arms.... and, after a day of pampering, I can show off my pretty pedicure and still wear a cute mini skirt while hiding my knobby knees and cellulite in open toe pantyhose and feel confident and sexy… and tooting my own horn a bit, being well past 50, I can still turn heads.
